Mightier than the Sword
Writers make a stand for freedom of speech

On Human Rights Day - December 8th - Penguin will publish Free Expression Is No Offence in association with English PEN, a vital part of an organisation that champions freedom of expression everywhere and the right of writers, artists and indeed anyone to say whatever they feel without fear of persecution or penalty.

Hamish Hamilton has an ongoing commitment to English PEN and all of its activities, including its objections to a proposed bill criminalising 'incitement to religious hatred' - a modification to the UK's justice system which puts all writers, artists and performers at risk, and limits all of our fundamental rights to free expression.

Salman Rushdie, Monica Ali, Philip Pullman, Rowan Atkinson, Howard Jacobson and Hanif Kureshi, as well as Hamish Hamilton's own Adam Phillips and Hari Kunzru, are among the highly acclaimed writers - of many faiths and none - who have contributed to Free Expression Is No Offence, edited by Lisa Appignanesi. We are proud to be publishing this exception collection of essays and contributions in support of our crucial and continuing right to express ourselves freely.
